Key achievements

  • Initiated, developed and implemented Yara’s seminal ‘Safe by Choice’ process  to cultivate a culture of care and reduce exposure to deliver a goal of zero injuries. Successfully reduced the total recordable injury rate from greater than 10 per million hours worked to 1.4 and facilitated significant cultural change to produce effective safety leader and engaged employees and contractors.
  • Empowered staff through coaching and mentoring and delivered training and development initiatives across technical safety areas, safety leadership, facilitation and problem solving. 
  • Managed the integration of new acquisitions following major expansion across 25 production plants including Brazil, Canada, Australia and South America, with responsibility for ensuring the highest standards of occupational safety across the global arena. 
  • Ensured robust governance frameworks by owning safety technical standards and procedures, including incident reporting, incident investigation and contractor safety management.
  • Drove continuous improvement by mobilising a team of 4 internal consultants to build a behavioural-based programme, identifying and analysing key risks and managed process implementation across the Yara plants. 
  • Identified a cost effective safety tool and subsequently implemented a single company wide incident reporting and follow up tool concerned with health and safety, quality and audits, improving overall efficiencies across the business. 
  • Pioneered HR restructuring initiatives throughout the UK business and delivered an objective performance related scheme with Yara International and led a structured salary and performance related pay system that was equitable across the UK organisation. 
  • Played a significant contribution role in ensuring the continuation of the UK ammonium nitrate industry and forged strategic partnerships with the DEFRA to establish The Ammonium Nitrate Safety Regulations 2003.
